Newberry Hill Heritage Park stewardship group receives Hood Canal Environmental Achievement Award
Kitsap County Parks’ Newberry Hill Heritage Park stewardship group was honored with the Hood Canal Coordinating Council’s 2015 Hood Canal Environmental Achievement Award. The award was presented this month to Tom Coleman, stewardship group chairperson, for the group’s success in fostering “the spirit of cooperation and collaboration towards achieving a healthy Hood Canal.”

Kitsap initiative aims to end veteran homelessness
A recent outreach project to survey veterans living without shelter in Kitsap County revealed that 45 veterans are homeless and living in situations not meant for human habitation. The outreach project was part of a local initiative to end homelessness for veterans, called Homes for All Who Served. It’s being spearheaded by a coalition of agencies who are dedicated to housing veterans, including the Kitsap County Veterans Advisory Board, the Washington Department of Veteran Affairs, the Veterans Administration, and a wide range of Kitsap housing and social service providers.

County seeks public input on the 2016-2036 Draft Comprehensive Plan
Kitsap County’s Department of Community Development (DCD) is hosting three open houses to invite the public to learn about the Comprehensive Plan Update. The County’s Comprehensive Plan serves as a complete policy document that guides County decisions and services on a wide range of topics including housing, transportation, land use, parks, natural environment and more.

Conference for Human Rights celebrates 25th year
Tickets are now on sale for the 25th Annual Kitsap County Conference for Human Rights, which takes place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, December 4 in the Kitsap Conference Center, Bremerton. This year’s conference focuses on “Where we are … Where we are going: A look back on human rights issues in Kitsap County over the last 25 years.” Through panel discussions, workshops and networking, the Conference for Human Rights brings people together to educate and foster communication, understanding and collaboration.

Kitsap County residents have the opportunity to express their diverse viewpoints, participate in local government and provide review and input to the Board of County Commissioners by serving as representatives on county advisory groups. These volunteer groups of involved citizens provide Commissioners with a broad-based well of diversity, talent, knowledge and skills to tap into.
