NEW - Golfers flock to Village Greens Golf course for free golf
The Village Greens Golf Course, in Port Orchard, opened for the season on March 9th and hosted 142 golfers, on a foggy day that finally turned sunny around 2pm. PGA Golf Professional, Bruce Weir, provided free clinics focusing on the long game and short game. Each clinic was received well by the attendees, who in many cases had either never taken a lesson, or hadn’t taken one in over 20 years.

NEW - Doo For You Success!
Kitsap County Parks Department provided 520 yards of free aged composted manure to the public at the annual Do For You in March. The annual Doo For You program, hosted at the County Fairgrounds, was part of the Kitsap Conservation District’s annual event which included tree disbursement and manure distribution for area gardeners and farmers.

Kitsap County Public Works to begin bypass lane improvement on Sidney Road NW
Kitsap County’s Department of Public Works is constructing a new southbound bypass lane on Sidney Road SW at the intersection of Shannon Drive SW, improving safety for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Community rallies to help repair vandalism at County Fairgrounds
Kitsap County Parks Department fairgrounds maintenance staff was dismayed the morning of March 5 as they completed the routine activities of opening gates, removing garbage, and determining their tasks for the day. More than 42 spray-painted tags were discovered covering 15 buildings. After contacting the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and taking photos of the vandalism, staff immediately got to work both removing the offensive graffiti as well as putting out the e-mail SOS to volunteers for their assistance. Responses came in quickly.

The Auditor’s Office is seeking individuals to serve on committees to draft voters’ guide arguments for the April 28 Special Election. This is an opportunity to provide voters with information about measures affecting their community.

Public involvement sought for Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park. Workshops set for March 28 and May 5 in Poulsbo
Planning for the stewardship of Kitsap County’s shoreline block of 535 acres in Port Gamble will be discussed in public workshops that get underway this month. The county’s Parks Department acquired the property, named the Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park, in February 2014 and was awarded a $175,000 grant from the state Department of Ecology to develop a stewardship plan and committee, and fund associated activities including environmental studies, property clean-up and the restoration planting of native plant species. .

Volunteer advocates needed for Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program
Do you want to truly make a difference in someone’s life? Do you enjoy working with senior citizens? Advocates are needed for the Washington State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program in Kitsap County, made up of a group of highly trained community volunteers who advocate for long-term care facility residents and their families, assisting them in achieving the highest level of quality of life and quality of care, a right guaranteed by law.

The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners welcomes applications for vacancies on county advisory groups. Citizens are encouraged to apply. Current openings include seats on the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Board; Arts Board; Commission on Children and Youth; Council for Human Rights; Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board; Ferry Advisory Committees; Manchester and Suquamish citizen advisory committees; Noxious Weed Control Board and the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board.

Volunteers needed for Kitsap's annual Water Festival
Help celebrate the 21st year of the Kitsap Water Festival by volunteering. The festival takes place 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 14 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. The annual Water Festival hosts up to 1,200 fourth- and fifth-grade students from across the county. Students learn the importance of protecting precious water resources.
