NEW - County secures lower interest rate on bonds, saves $341,000 in annual financing costs
Kitsap County recently closed two debt transactions with interest rates lower than anticipated. The Sewer Utility Fund issued $17,360,000 worth of bonds at a true interest cost of 2.14 percent.

Work begins on Seabeck Highway NW late April
Kitsap County’s Department of Public Works begins road work on Seabeck Highway, between Calamity Lane NW and NW Gross Road, beginning in late April. The project involves widening the travel lanes on Seabeck Highway NW to 12 feet, paving roadway shoulders, and constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Seabeck Highway NW and NW Holly Road to improve safety for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Memorial Day weekend Celebration of Life ceremony, Run to Tahoma May 23
One unclaimed, deceased veteran will be honored with words and music at The Unforgotten, Run to Tahoma VI Celebration of Life ceremony Saturday, May 23 during Memorial Day Weekend at the Kitsap County Administration Building plaza, 619 Division Street, Port Orchard. Following the ceremony, the departed veteran will be escorted to Tahoma National Cemetery near Kent. A documentary on the Run to Tahoma will be shown at 9:15 a.m. with the ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Kingston Complete Streets planning study introduced at public forum May 6
Kingston Complete Streets, a planning study conducted by Kitsap County Public Works, will be presented at a community forum during the Kingston Citizens Advisory Council public meeting from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6 at the North Kitsap Fire & Rescue Paul T. Nichol North Kitsap Fire Station, 26642 Miller Bay Road, Kingston. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend and join in a discussion with county staff, consultants, local business owners and residents about issues of concern and ideas for advancing development that benefits the community.

County announces Earth Day Award winners
The annual Earth Day Awards presentation take place tonight (4/13) at 5:30 p.m., at the Board of County Commissioners regular televised meeting at the Kitsap County Administration Building in Port Orchard.

The 2015 Solid Waste Division Earth Day Awards are presented to individual citizens, organizations, schools, and businesses for their innovative environmental programs or projects. Nominations were sought for exemplary environmental leadership qualities in programs or projects emphasizing sustainability, waste reduction, recycling, and hazardous waste management. These outstanding achievers make a difference with their choices, and lead the way as they make others aware of environmental issues.

County seeks road project suggestions
Kitsap County is seeking road project suggestions to consider as they prepare their annual 6-year Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and Annual Construction Program. The TIP is used to prioritize road improvement projects. This year’s selection process determines which new roadway projects to include in the 2016–2021 TIP.

Public involvement sought for Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park. Workshops set for March 28 and May 5 in Poulsbo
Planning for the stewardship of Kitsap County’s shoreline block of 535 acres in Port Gamble will be discussed in public workshops that get underway this month. The county’s Parks Department acquired the property, named the Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park, in February 2014 and was awarded a $175,000 grant from the state Department of Ecology to develop a stewardship plan and committee, and fund associated activities including environmental studies, property clean-up and the restoration planting of native plant species. .

Do you want to truly make a difference in someone’s life? Do you enjoy working with senior citizens? Advocates are needed for the Washington State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program in Kitsap County, made up of a group of highly trained community volunteers who advocate for long-term care facility residents and their families, assisting them in achieving the highest level of quality of life and quality of care, a right guaranteed by law.

The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners welcomes applications for vacancies on county advisory groups. Citizens are encouraged to apply. Current openings include seats on the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Board; Arts Board; Commission on Children and Youth; Council for Human Rights; Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board; Ferry Advisory Committees; Manchester and Suquamish citizen advisory committees; Noxious Weed Control Board and the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board.
